West Chester University (PA) Community Mental Health Clinic Ribbon Cutting March 9

The University’s Community Mental Health Clinic has been serving clients since August but formally introduced itself to the campus and community on Friday, March 9. The clinic is located at 125 West Rosedale Avenue on the eighth floor of Wayne Hall on West Rosedale Avenue. Free parking is available in the lot in front of the building.

On Friday, the grand opening ceremony ran from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by an open house from 12 to 3 p.m. Tours of the clinic were led by the clinic staff and graduate students in the University’s Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) program, who provide the clinic’s evaluation and treatment sessions under the supervision of experienced, licensed psychologists.

During the open house, Jon Burgwin made a presentation on the stigma surrounding mental health. One of the young adult speakers from Minding Your Mind, he understands this stigma: Having suffered anxiety in high school, he turned to drugs and alcohol to avoid stress. Now free of those crutches and a certified yoga instructor, Burgwin teaches others how yoga, mindfulness, and exercise can help overcome stress, anxiety, and depression.

In addition, the open house offered several activities, opportunities to learn about mindfulness, and a chance to speak with students and clinicians. The sale of T-shirts benefitted the clinic’s Psy.D. students.

The clinic is open to the community, offering services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families from all backgrounds with specializations in trauma-related disorders and child & adolescent mental health. It is regularly open Monday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday 12 to 5 p.m.; and Wednesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are seven faculty supervisors who are experienced, licensed psychologists. One is bilingual and supervises the doctoral students who see Spanish-speaking clients.
